If you are at all familiar with new age movements you've probably heard the term "indigo child" or "crystal child". There's a lot of hype around those terms as they seek to describe a state of consciousness most frequently found in kids, but some adults as well.
In my opinion, the new age movement made the term somewhat of a joke, causing many people in the general public, parents, or people who may identify with the characteristics of being indigo or crystal, to scoff and/or shy away from seeking to understand what it truly means, because frankly it can sound like kooky new age mess if you read the wrong source.
If you want to know if you (or your kid) have some of the characteristics I will be writing about I created a handy dandy questionnaire you can quickly take at the end of this post. Also, I know sometimes this blog may sound a little like the girl in the video below, but I'm trying to ground some pretty esoteric concepts, so bear with me.
What the heck is an Indigo Child?
Indigo child is a term used to describe a person (not necessarily a child) who seems to embody a "new way" of looking at and dealing with the world. Indigo individuals typically come into this life with a relatively intact sense of who they are (although many struggle in adolescence...but who doesn't?) They have a clear sense of purpose and feel the need to reform, break down, or challenge outmoded models, systems, and ideologies.
This urge to seek the new and challenge old paradigms goes beyond personality characteristics of being non-conformist or a natural leader. In fact, some indigo people may be quite shy or remote, but still feel an inner need to challenge old beliefs.
Most indigo people also seem to be born with a very natural spiritual understanding that often reaches beyond religion. If they are raised with a particularly religious ideology they may challenge (internally or externally) the precepts of that ideology seeking rather the kernels of truth underlying the ideology and as such feel a need to pursue unconventional or at least nontraditional spiritual explanations (such as mysticism).
Many Indigos have exceptional intuitive faculties that are quite developed very young. Many indigo children have a difficult time understanding their intuitive or psychic insights because societally this aspect of their awareness is typically punished, shamed or dismissed. Parents of indigo children may be frightened of their child's intuitive faculties, unsure of how to respond to their abilities. As a result many indigo people learn to "close down" their third eyes, which further frustrates their sense of self.
This shutting down can manifest in various ways, but most commonly indigo people experience periods of depression and apathy (where they may feel abandoned by a spiritual source).
Indigo kids and adults are often very environmentally sensitive, and as a result may manifest a variety of allergies or autoimmune issues that can be hard to diagnose. They are very often highly empathic (feeling the emotions of others and their environments) and exhibit wisdom beyond their years (which is evident when they are young children).
They may be highly accelerated in their learning or intellectual abilities, but there is often a deficit somewhere else, thus many Indigo children and adults are categorized as having Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, although the "deficit" can manifest in other ways.
These diagnoses are partially accurate in that the indigo has to filter through information in a different way than "traditional learners" because they have a more prevalent level of intuitive information filtering in that makes it difficult to parse out what is and isn't helpful at any given time. Additionally, many indigos aren't Interested in learning about things that aren't meaningful to them or other people on a humanistic, spiritual, intuitive or holistic level.
Nonetheless, indigo people will always be incredibly strong-willed and unwilling to accept consensual explanations for things. In school they could have been seen as problematic or difficult because the old adage of "because I said so" or "because I'm the authority" was an unacceptable response to their naturally inquisitive minds. Many people may perceive them as arrogant, entitled, or stubborn because of their strongly held sense of self and unwavering ideals.
Indigos feel they need to make a large impact in some way, so they often have lofty or big goals, and feel frustrated when the world doesn't bend to their aspirations.
Indigo people, most of whom are about 40 years old and younger (although there a chunk of "1st generation indigos older than this) are meant to usher in a "new consciousness" by breaking down outmoded conceptions. So whatever their life path or personality type, there will always be an element of challenging the status quo, and a felt sense that their purposes involves "raising people's/the planets consciousness".
So why the term indigo? Indigo originally was meant to refer to these people's aura color. Now, I don't physically see auras, although I can sense the energy field and what may be a color frequency around others (as most people can), but I can say that indigo people often have a sort of "electric charge" that surrounds them, which is indicative of them holding a vibration inside their auric space that is fairly high. If we think about how color vibration works, indigo as a color has a fast wavelength compared to say red or black. So the term indigo refers to the speed of the vibration of their essential energy (soul).
You can think of indigo like a "soul color" which is a bit like a personality type. People that have that particular "soul personality type" will exhibit these characteristics. There are some people who are orange, others who are yellow and others who are blue.
You can also have a mixture of types in one person (but this is a whole other blog post). Whatever the color, that soul color is meant to do a particular thing on the planet and brings a unique flavor, so they are all important and valid in various ways.
What's important to note here is that its a particular frequency, or consciousness level, those people bring to the planet. Think about Martin Luther King Jr., or Gandhi as early indigo exemplars.
This kid is a good example of the kind of wisdom you will get from an indigo child. It's almost like they come in with a knowing in place and aren't shy about sharing it, especially if you give them the space and lack of judgment to do so.
Crystal people, most of whom are about 21 years and younger, have an even finer vibration and are often highly sensitive. You can often recognize crystals by their clear and incandescent eyes. Their eyes often look as though they are made of crystal, and many people find them striking or at the least mesmerizing, deep or beautiful.
Crystal kids are highly sensitive, even more than indigos, and as such may be highly susceptible to environmental, physical and emotional stress or pollutants of any kind. They are also extremely intuitive, but their intuitive insights are often difficult for them to verbalize. They may seem like they are 1000 years old as a 4 year old, and may feel as though they were never really children but rather "playing the role of a child".
Crystal kids differ from indigos in that they are generally positive, loving and more open, compared to indigos who can be quite moody or emotionally labile and stormy. Crystal kids may have an even more difficult time fitting into standard cultural norms, and efforts to force them to do so will be very painful for them.
If indigo people were meant to break through outmoded systems and beliefs, the crystals are meant to rebuild them with a more expanded, loving and higher consciousness or vibration. They are like spiritual generators bringing in higher energies of love and unity.
Of course this is a huge task, and most of them do this simply by being who and where they are. They do not feel as much of a need to "find their purpose" and may be more content doing mundane or quiet things because they feel this energy all the time, and as such bring it to others.
Crystal children, most of whom are born after 1994, are still quite young and parents of these individuals may feel ill equipped to parent them. They may be unapologetically intuitive and may offer guidance and spiritual wisdom to people unsolicitedly, that can be strikingly and eerily accurate (something indigos often do as well).
Many crystals and indigos also seem to "come in" with a working knowledge of technology and complex intellectual systems, and are adept at working with new technologies and concepts that others may find difficult or overly complex.
Crystal refers to the very high frequency energy these kids hold in their energy systems, which is why they are so energetically sensitive. They don't seem to emanate a color so much as a pure crystallized presence. Both indigos and crystals are either middle-aged to very old souls, and this will show in the depth in their eyes and the wisdom of their experience.
Crystals may struggle with integrating their personality and instinctual issues, and as a result may have a hard time taking care of day-to-day tasks. Crystals may also feel very unsettled, depressed or angry when the spiritual guidance they are intimately linked into, lulls or stops for a period of time.
Okay, So What Good Does this Do Me?
With all of this new-agey ness out of the way, let me say this doesn't exclude indigo and crystal people from having personality issues, emotional problems, psychological problems or with dealing with the stress of everyday human life we all deal with. In fact, sometimes they have more of these issues, partially because society doesn't know how to manage or understand their gifts and shortcomings, and partially because holding a consciousness of this level can be psychologically and emotionally taxing.
For those who are parents of someone you may believe to fit into one of these categories, it's important to have the support of someone who understands the issues these kids may have so that their experience isn't invalidated, which can cause greater psychological and social stress as they age.
It is not that these people are "special" in an exempt kind of way (although indigos may sometimes secretly want to be treated this way) but rather the consciousness they are bringing to the planet is relatively new, and as such doesn't have a strong social or cultural understanding; particularly because of misinformation about the indigo and crystal people from a consumer-driven, new age movement.
If you have trouble thinking about it from an energetic or soul standpoint, consider it like a generational trait. If we think of the relative social and spiritual consciousness of the "average" pre-baby boomer we can see that there was a particular flavor to that generation, that they ushered in certain ideas about work ethic and family values which still predominate today.
The indigo and crystal people are bringing in a new vision and ideology for the future, much like a new generational flavor. With that said, unlike generational differences, not all people in these age ranges will be indigo and crystal, and in fact, most aren't, which is what makes it more difficult for the people who are (and their caretakers).
If you are an indigo or a parent of a possible indigo or crystal person, and need help understanding and integrating your/their experiences (personally or culturally) we can offer some guidance from our own experience on ways to help manage some of the challenges associated. (Okay, I have to admit that sounded like one of those PSA's "if you or your loved one's know someone struggling with Indigo call the Indigo hotline at 1-800-888-indigo.) Seriously though, shoot us an email.
