Diamonds are said to be "a girls best friend", right? Well besides the statement's sexist and misogynistic undertones, it never made a lot of sense to me. In the words of Fiona Apple, "I don't understand about diamonds or why men by them, what's so impressive about a diamond except the mining?"
Okay they are pretty sometimes, but what is impressive about the diamond is that it's said to be a great blocker of electromagnetic energy from computers and cell phones. they are natural detoxifiers, and because of the collective thought patterns around diamonds they can help fortify and enforce fidelity, commitment and the manifestation of abundance. Conversely, There are a lot of negative associations with diamonds as well, hence Fiona's lamentation.
I have been known to be attracted to a few shiny rocks and minerals in my day. Okay, I have a pretty extensive collection of various minerals, stones and rocks, and I may have a special box that I keep them in because I'm afraid they'll get hurt. I keep most of them because they are really beautiful but also because each one carries a particular energetic charge (and I'm kind of a weird nerd)...
In my defense there's a good reason human beings are attracted to stones and gemstones (besides them being pretty). They allow us to enter into a state of presence while looking at them. If its a particularly beautiful gemstone our conscious mind is suspended and we can feel peaceful while gazing, much like some people do when they look at a flower. When we admire something beautiful we move into the inspirational/intuitive part of our brain and as such have a harder time getting stuck in our mental muck.
However, there's another reason human beings are attracted to gems and crystals and that of course has to do with the particular quality or energy the material has. Since these little pieces of interesting rock are plucked from the core material of the earth, composed of various particles of different gasses, mineral deposits and interesting little atoms, they tend to have a particular charge with which the human body can resonate.
There have been countless books written about rock, crystal and gemstone properties. Covering topics such as what element they resonate with, what human quality or emotion they vibrate to and even healing properties they may have.
Massage therapists use them to help move energy through energetic meridian points in the body, and they've been used in various ways for thousands of years by human beings to do everything from divine the future to ward off negative spirits. The consensus, the possible uses of crystals, rocks and gemstones are manyfold.
Some are well-known like the quartz crystal, recognized for its healing and cleansing properties (some water companies even use it to cleanse the free radical particles in the water). Some are not so well known, like moldavite, which is thought to be a substance not of this planet (cue 1950s Martian movie music). Whatever the case the statement from the skeptically minded, scientifically savvy Western mind always seems to be "yah, but its just a rock."
If you've ever held a crystal in your hand and closed your eyes (if you can quiet your mental dialogue for long enough) you can feel a vibration, a sort of pulse. Some crystals and stones have a very subtle vibration (like the rose quartz) others (like moldavite) actually feel like they are buzzing and will make your hand physically warm. When you think about it the science behind it isn't spooky and it makes total sense. These are substances comprised of materials which induce chemical reactions in the earth.
Our bodies, (comprised of 60-65 percent water) respond just like everything else, to particles interacting with our atoms. We absorb things around us on a daily basis, in a similar fashion to the water particle. When you hold, touch or sometimes even just get near certain minerals, rocks, gems, stones and crystals your body responds. But this responds triggers in more than just your physical body.
Your etheric body, or the atmospheric energy around your physical body, responds as well, and sets off a chain reaction in your other bodies (subtle body and mental body). In this way the stone triggers off a reaction throughout your whole energy system.
With that said, because these are substances that come from the earth, formed from millions and billions of years of natural processes they can tend to hold onto energy for a long time. And because they tend to absorb or exude specific energetic patterns they can pick up and retain vibrations from their environments for a while.
So if you wear a blood diamond you will be absorbing the negative energetic frequencies of fear, anger and systematic violence surrounding the excavation of the product and the exploitation of the miner and it will interact with your energy system accordingly. Conversely, if you have a piece of quartz crystal or tourmaline that was mined consciously and sold in a setting and by a positive high-frequency seller you will absorb that energy as well.
Because stones tend to mirror the energetic environments they come from its important to cleanse them. Even if you don't necessarily believe that it can affect your energy, mood or physical body that much, do me favor and place it in a substance-appropriate natural cleansing solution (vinegar and water, or sea salt and water works well for most stones).
Some common settings for jewelry like gold, silver and platinum also hold onto energy. Gold for example tends to hold onto energy for less time than silver, which may be quite stubborn in letting go of energetic debris. So that ring you inherited from your grumpy aunt Ruth may be in need of a good cleansing, especially if you have difficulty with your own grumpy moods.
Just as the stones we buy absorb the energy around them in addition to resonating with their own particular properties, so do the materials used to build our homes, and just about everything else we come in contact with. Nonetheless, being aware of the energetic imprint in the objects we're in contact with us helpful.
That old antique rocking chair you bought from the rummage sale may be cool but be aware of the energy that comes with it and cleanse it accordingly, smudging it with sage can help transmute some of the energy attached to it so that it can be neutralized (this can be done with stones and jewelry too). Sage smudging has been used for years to cleanse just about everything and is really simple.
So even if you don't see yourself becoming one of those kooky people with 1400 crystals (which you've affectionately named) lying around your home, being aware of the impact they can have on your physical, emotional and mental well being is useful.
For those days when you're feeling a bit unsure of yourself try carrying around a chunk of carnelian and see if it gives you a bit of confidence.
If you are having trouble making a decision and need some clarity, get yourself a small piece of fluorite which helps with mental focus and decision making. There are thousands of stones with double the amount of interpreted meanings.
If you don't want to get into all the stone properties just find one that intuitively feels good to you, cleanse it, and put it in your desk, next to your bed or computer. If you choose it, it's probably the right thing for you at this time.
You don't have to star in your own episode of "Crazy Hippie Stone Freak" to enjoy and appreciate the various benefits (beyond aesthetic appreciation) of various rocks, stones and minerals. It's just a matter of tuning into the things we have as being things on one level, and on a deeper level being energetic inheritances that come with their own set of vibrations that anyone can tune into
