Do you have chronic problemitis? It's a condition that affects billions of people and yet hasn't been detected by the CDC. It's not deadly but its symptoms are so life altering it can erode your health slowly over many years, and if nothing else make you incredibly annoying to friends and loved ones.
Problemitis is a condition that affects our ability to relax, causing symptoms like depression, anxiety, argumentativeness, anger and chronic mistrust. It affects your ability to relax and creates tension and unrest in calm situations and sabotages relationships and jobs.
Problemitis is a condition characterized by the unconscious impulse to search for problems where none currently exist. It makes positive situations into negative ones and preemptively searches for the darkness in the light. It is distinguished from pessimism in that with the pessimist the attitude is one that is programmed into the person's temperament and as such could not be considered an acquired condition, although the pessimist may have chronic problemitis, those that suffer with problemitis are not necessarily pessimists.
Problemitis is contracted through prolonged exposure to the ups and downs of human life, and unfortunately many will contract this debilitating disease due to unsatisfactory education about prevention techniques. It is believed to have formed out of the human ego's need to be prepared for disappointment and grief, combining with a propensity toward entitlement and lack of perspective due to privilege. As such problemitis seems to be particularly widespread in first-world countries where the ego has developed to such a degree that anything can become a problem.
The ego, unable to handle prolonged happiness or positivity produces covert strains of negative energy which pump into the subconscious brain causing the host to mistrust goodness out of a desire not to be caught off guard by "something bad". While it initially was a protective function its over-functioning creates a chronic condition that is difficult to cure.
Problemitis preys on the emotion of trust by slowly breaking down its foundations through retroflection. Essentially the mind learns to say, "last time I felt good something bad happened...don't trust this feeling" and thus begins to look for the impending problem in the current favorable situation. Many people will recognize this as "waiting for the other shoe to drop". Those in relationships can recognize this as waiting for their partner to reveal an unfavorable secret or unsavory characteristic that will alter the relationship for the worse.
Some severe sufferers have even lost sleep and fallen into depressions when a problem hasn't presented itself during a period of relative calm and prosperity causing the individual to sabotage relationships, jobs and favorable conditions through a variety of acting out behaviors.
The irony of problemitis is its tendency to misinterpret the normal ebb and flow of human events causing the host to feel a false sense of control over life. Through retroactive reflection the ego begins to believe that through identifying the problematic element in a favorable situation it has in essence thwarted something undesirable, when in actuality it may be creating it (following the universal law of energy follows thought.)
Treatment for problemitis includes the cultivation of introspective vigilance. One must become adept at recognizing the tendency to search for problems where currently none exist. One must be willing to allow the peaks and valleys of their lives to unfurl without anticipation of the next turn. One must be willing to acknowledge that life happens to everybody, and that through pandering to problemitis one strips themselves of present joy out of fear of future pain. One must be wiling to allow the "is-ness" of the current moment to exist and also recognize one's own tendency to over-exaggerate issues in order to have something to bitch about.
Advanced treatment for problemitis may include the practice of non-judgement about what happens. Ceasing to label situations as "good" or "bad" creates greater reality around the happenings of life and strangles problemitis at its structural root. Without judgement problemitis cannot exist because it thrives on the hosts labeling of reality. This is a difficult treatment plan for most human beings, who strengthen ego identifications through judgement.
You can prevent the spread and growth of this terrible epidemic through proper treatment of your own problemitis. If you know someone that suffers from problemitis suggest home treatment through enjoying the present moment and the possibility of dealing with problems as they arise, and cultivating a larger more global perspective about what is really a problem compared to a minor annoyance or inconvenience. We can stamp this out together, much like only we can prevent forest fires.
